How do I find my device?

Finding the right register entry in the New Job wizard’s Device Chooser — how the job’s own answers narrow the list, the fast ways in, what the badges mean, how to pick the right variant of a model, and what it means when a device isn’t offered at all.

The chooser is the ENA register

CLRD’s Device Chooser is the ENA’s own registers — the Type Test Register for generation, the charge-point and heat-pump registers for load devices. The register lists each device with its compliance status and its Fully Type Tested status per standard, alongside its capacities. The entry’s register reference is what prints on the G98/G99 forms, and it is what the DNO trusts instead of re-checking the electronics — which is why choosing the right entry matters, and why every job freezes a snapshot of the entry it chose.

The job narrows it first

The chooser never shows the whole register — it narrows to the devices compatible with the job, so finding the right one means searching a short, relevant list rather than thousands of entries. The answers before it do the narrowing:

A device that seems to be missing is often just filtered: a single-phase model won’t show while Device Phase says three-phase, and a heat pump won’t show on an EV-CP row. Check the row’s answers before concluding the register lacks the device.

The fast way in

The quickest route is usually narrow, then search:

And if you already know the device’s ENA reference, skip all of that: type or paste it straight into the field — the search matches references too, and lands on the exact entry.

Reading an entry

Entries group by manufacturer, then model, then variant — each variant showing its version, the software it was tested at (“SW …”) and its ENA reference. The badges carry the register’s answers:

The badges can move the job, and when they do it is correct behaviour, not a fault: a job that would otherwise qualify as G98 routes as a G99 SGI-1 job when its device isn’t G98 type tested — the same install-then-notify outcome for you, on the form that actually covers the device. The converse has no fallback: a General Type A job that includes a G98-only device is blocked and cannot run — the ways out are a G99-registered device, or a capacity within an SGI procedure.

Variants: pick the one on the wall

Under one make and model there is often more than one entry — commonly two, where the later variant was re-tested with newer firmware and adds a capability such as CLS. These are separate register entries, with their own references and their own type tests.

You are not free to pick the variant you’d prefer. The entry must be the device actually installed — and that includes the firmware/software version, which is part of what was type tested (each variant lists its tested version as “SW …”). Check what your device runs on its own display — usually an About or Settings menu — or on its datasheet. The entry’s reference prints on forms you and the customer sign, so declaring a variant the device isn’t misdescribes the type tests it holds.

Want the later variant — say for its CLS capability? Upgrade the firmware first (per the manufacturer’s process) so the device on the wall genuinely is that variant, then select it.

When the device isn’t offered

A device appears in the chooser only when three things hold at once: the ENA lists it as compliant, it is type tested to a standard CLRD can file (Fully Type Tested to EREC G98 or G99 — a partially type tested device needs the bespoke G99 A2 compliance forms, outside CLRD’s scope), and the register still serves it (a withdrawn or superseded entry leaves the chooser at CLRD’s next refresh). Jurisdiction counts too: Great Britain and Northern Ireland are separate register columns, and a device holding only the NI approval isn’t valid on a GB job.

Compliance is the ENA’s own verdict, separate from type testing — well over a thousand register entries are marked non-compliant while still holding a full type test. CLRD only ever files compliant devices.

Existing equipment plays by older rules

A device leaving the register doesn’t leave the customer’s wall, and the standards fix an already-connected device’s type-test status at the date it was connected. So the existing-device choosers also offer devices that are currently non-compliant or have been removed from the ENA register — each labelled with which — accepted where CLRD can show the device was compliant at the time it was installed. Where it can’t show that, the device is refused, and the error says exactly that: CLRD does not describe equipment as register-approved on a form you sign unless it can show it was. Proposed units are never in this territory — a new install always takes the register as it stands today.

CLRD does not otherwise support devices with an unknown compliance or type-test status. A device that genuinely was compliant when it was installed is allowed by the DNO either way — but where CLRD cannot show that from its own records, it does not yet support recording the device.
